Australia has a preferential voting system that doesn't split the votes. Vote splitting only happens in countries like the USA, where they have a 'first past the post' electoral system. Preferential voting allows people to list candidates in the order of their preference (1.2.3.4.5...) so if you don't get your first preference candidate, your whole no. 1 vote will be distributed to your next preference (your no. 2 vote), etc. If all other candidates have fewer votes and you have put Liberal 7th and Labor 8th, your vote will still be counted as a vote for Liberal and against Labor. |
